Survey: LGBT Visitors to Israel Remain Longer, Spend More Money Than Other Tourists | LGBTQ+ Destinations | Scoop.it
A new survey found that gay tourists to Israel remain longer and spend 40 percent more money than other tourists, the Hebrew news site nrg reported on Tuesday. According to the report, the survey also revealed that tourists to the Jewish state from LGBT communities abroad tend to make contact and develop relationships with Israelis through social media and dating sites prior to their arrival. The survey – the first of its kind — was conducted during Gay Pride Week, which kicked off on […]

Airbnb's Jonathan Mildenhall: The man redefining 'all-inclusive' travel

Airbnb's Jonathan Mildenhall: The man redefining 'all-inclusive' travel | LGBTQ+ Destinations | Scoop.it
Diversity is more than just a box-ticking exercise for Airbnb CMO Jonathan Mildenhall, who lives it, loves it and shares his inclusive approach with the world.
Matt Skallerud's insight:

And in the process of giving millennials what they want, Mildenhall oversees some of the most inclusive, diversity-focused work to be found in modern marketing. Just look at Airbnb’s 2016 LGBT Pride campaign.... "This is the first LGBT campaign I know of that features a diversity of religion, race and gender identity," he says. "We’ve got a transgender man, a black queer woman and a gay Muslim guy who believes in an Islam that welcomes everybody.... "The LGBT community travels more and we over-index in terms of LGBT hosts, so each June we shine a light on Pride. But this really powerful work isn’t designed to sell a night or get another home on the platform. It just inspires our community about the human values that we believe in."

In photos: Toronto’s Dyke March and Pride Parade

Toronto’s Pride Month concluded with three marquee events this weekend, starting with the Trans March on July 1. Over 10,000 transgender and gender non-conforming people joined by their allies took over Yonge Street on Friday evening. The record-setting attendance marked the largest Trans March ever to take place in Toronto, and quite possibly the world.

Beyond gay-friendly: Curaçao flies the rainbow flag proudly

Beyond gay-friendly: Curaçao flies the rainbow flag proudly | LGBTQ+ Destinations | Scoop.it

Annually, on the cusp of fall, when leaves start to turn red and yellow in colder parts of the world, one small island in the Caribbean bursts with every color of the rainbow.

Matt Skallerud's insight:

For Theo Meijer– preferred photographer for weddings and the only local photographer specialized in LGBTQ+ ceremonies- the seven-day fiesta that is called Curaçao Pride is one of the highlights of the year. Although he is straight, Meijer supports the LGBTQ+ movement and makes it a point to capture this special occasion where locals and visitors alike unite to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Meijer is not an exception. Curaçao’s sunny disposition towards the LGBTQ+ community is almost unexpected as the Caribbean is notorious for its socially conservative attitude. Despite the fact that the law does not grant its LGBTQ+ minority the same rights as its other citizens, the island’s ‘biba i laga biba’ (live and let live) mentality makes it one of the top rated gay-welcoming destinations in the entire Caribbean!

Obama Names LGBT Landmark As National Monument

Obama Names LGBT Landmark As National Monument | LGBTQ+ Destinations | Scoop.it
President Obama is designating a new national monument at the Stonewall Inn, the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement.
Matt Skallerud's insight:

The Stonewall National Monument in New York City will be the first addition to the National Park System specifically highlighting the history of the LGBT community. The monument covers nearly 8 acres in New York's Greenwich Village including a landmark gay bar, the Stonewall Inn. In June of 1969, gay patrons at the bar fought back against police persecution — an event that's widely seen as a watershed in the campaign for LGBT rights.

Gay Travelers on Where to Go From Here

Gay Travelers on Where to Go From Here | LGBTQ+ Destinations | Scoop.it
In a post-Orlando world, L.G.B.T. people are balancing whether to vacation in a gay-friendly enclave with the need for safety.
Matt Skallerud's insight:

When a homophobic killer armed with an assault rifle perpetrated one of the worst mass shootings in United States history in an Orlando gay bar this month, the reassuring idea that such places are sanctuaries was upended for many of us. Gay bars are supposed to be refuges from intolerance; judgment-free zones that are, for many people, the only public places you can be truly, essentially, you. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people often travel with the thought in mind that almost anywhere we go, we’ll be able to find a neighborhood, a club circuit or a beach town where acceptance is a given.

Six ways to grow your business through the power of connections

Six ways to grow your business through the power of connections | LGBTQ+ Destinations | Scoop.it

Extend your work into the real world - Adam Groffman quit his job as a book designer in 2010 to move to Berlin and launch Travelsofadam.com. His website often makes it into Top 20 Travel Blogs lists and has featured in newspapers and magazines.

Matt Skallerud's insight:

"Last summer, I started an offline networking group - Make Friends in Berlin - with my friend Cheryl Howard. It has served as an outlet for us to share tips and help newcomers get acquainted with living in a new city. We've grown into a community of over 1,000 members and regularly have meet-ups of 100-150 participants. It’s allowed us to network with new people and extend our blogs out into the real world."

New York State ad campaign tries to steal business away from states with anti-LGBT laws

New York State ad campaign tries to steal business away from states with anti-LGBT laws | LGBTQ+ Destinations | Scoop.it
New York State is capitalizing on the negative publicity that three states have garnered for their anti-LGBT stances. Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has launched an “Open Doors Campaign” that will air TV advertisements in Texas, Mississippi, and North Carolina touting New York as a preferable place to relocate.
Matt Skallerud's insight:

The ads feature multiple images of same-sex couples and reference Ellis Island, the Underground Railroad, the fight for women’s suffrage, and the Stonewall Rebellion. New York is depicted as a place that “welcomes those unwelcome in other places.”
