tOpening Night at The Dali Museum & Mahaffey Theate

Matt Skallerud's insight:

The evening networking begins at The Dali Museum, the largest collection of the surrealist painter's works outside of his native Spain. Attendees will have a chance to view the collection and enjoy cocktails and light hors d'oeuvres before moving to the neighboring Mahaffey Theater, the city's waterfront performing arts venue, for more food and drinks plus live music.

Attendees of this year's fundraising event to benefit the IGLTA Foundation are in for a special treat. Join us for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres alongside the astonishing collection of world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly’s unique glasswork. The Chihuly Collection is the first installation of his art in a building designed specifically for that purpose. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Foundation's efforts to inspire the next generation of LGBTQ travel professionals through education, research and leadership development.

A Night Out in L.A.'s Newest "Gayborhood," Downtown Los Angeles

A Night Out in L.A.'s Newest "Gayborhood," Downtown Los Angeles | LGBT Destinations | Scoop.it

For decades many have considered West Hollywood the gay capital of Los Angeles. While countless young homosexuals, including myself, have turned to WeHo to sow their wild oats, others have wished for an alternative. Especially as you enter your 30s (as I begrudgingly did last year), Santa Monica Boulevard sometimes feels a little too crazy.

Matt Skallerud's insight:

Luckily for people like me, a new "gayborhood" has emerged in downtown Los Angeles. While divey Mexican gay bar the New Jalisco has been around for years, three new gay establishments all opened their doors in 2015: Bar Mattachine, Redline and Precinct. I went with some friends to check out the burgeoning downtown LGBTQ scene and explore how a night out in DTLA compares to Silver Lake and West Hollywood.

Beyond Proud, LGBT Toronto

Beyond Proud, LGBT Toronto | LGBT Destinations | Scoop.it

In April of this year, I joined ten US meeting and event planners for a three-day “Men About Town” experience organized by Tourism Toronto. It was my seventh excursion to Toronto since first visiting two decades ago, and most entertaining, and eye-opening, by far.

Matt Skallerud's insight:

My early ventures were of the in-out variety, and not the pleasurable kind, but as a dot.com “executive” somewhat at sea in the role. There were no real touches, just taxis, windowless meeting rooms, corporate hotels, and lobby bars, which did little to disprove Toronto’s then prevailing reputation as an Americanized, corporatized yawn. Or, as the late-actor Peter Ustinov once remarked, “Toronto is a kind of New York operated by the Swiss.”
