Spain continues to grow as top destination for gay travellers

Spain continues to grow as top destination for gay travellers | LGBTQ+ Destinations | Scoop.it
Between Sitges, Ibiza and Gran Canaria, Spain has long been known as one of the most popular international locations for gay travellers.
Matt Skallerud's insight:

Just how popular though has been made clear by new research which reveals the importance to Spain of the powerful ‘pink pound’. While tourism has been booming in the country in general with a 12% growth in 2015, gay tourism has seen even more spectacular growth with an estimated 28% increase last year.

Spain’s Best Small Towns for a Weekend Getaway | LGBTQ+ Destinations | Scoop.it

Whether a local dish, a historic monument or simply the charm of an easy & simple way of life, these small Spanish towns are definitely worth your time & energy

Via Fabrice Tasendo
Matt Skallerud's insight:

Spain is a country of pueblos, or small towns, and many Spaniards spend their holidays going back to these villages where their families are from, getting fascinating glimpses into a history of a time gone by. Though small in size and population, they each have their own unique features making it worth the effort it may take to get there.

The Best Places for Gay Holidays

The Best Places for Gay Holidays | LGBTQ+ Destinations | Scoop.it
A round-up of some of Europe's (and the world's) best gay destinations for holidays and other adventures.
Matt Skallerud's insight:

Travel is travel, yes. But this year I’ve also realized just how many of my own trips and experiences are almost certainly chosen because of my own sexual preference. Where I’ve traveled to isn’t necessarily anything to do with the fact that I’m gay, I guess, but these are the places that I’ve found that are actually great for other gay travelers like myself—either solo or for gay couples. I never thought I’d be the guy who ended up going to (and actually enjoying!) stereotypically gay destinations, but hey, here I am. Over the past year, I’ve just realized that I like to travel to places where other gay travelers tend to migrate to. I’m all for venturing out to further places, but every now and then, I just need a gay holiday…

Madrid: World Gay Pride Capital until 2017

Madrid: World Gay Pride Capital until 2017 | LGBTQ+ Destinations | Scoop.it
The Spanish capital will host the international celebration as well as the Euro Pride event
Matt Skallerud's insight:

Madrid will be the world’s proudest city in 2017. For the first time, the Spanish capital will serve as the host for the international LGBTQ World Pride event, as well as for Euro Pride. “It’s very important, because it’s never been done before – it’s the first time these two events are being celebrated in the same city,” says Juan Carlos Alonso, president of World Pride Madrid 2017’s planning committee. Last Sunday, Alonso and Javier Garrigues, Spanish consul in Amsterdam, received the baton of Euro Pride from the Netherlands on August 7. In July, Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena officially took over the responsibility of World Pride 2017.

Why You Should Visit These Winter Events and Festivals in Spain

Why You Should Visit These Winter Events and Festivals in Spain | LGBTQ+ Destinations | Scoop.it

Spain is a great summertime destination but that doesn’t necessarily mean it slows down after all the summer fun. In the colder months there’s a wide variety of things going on including celebrating pride in the winter, lots of holiday festivals and parties and plenty of parades, both traditional and gay. With so much happening, Spain is definitely a year-round destination and may even be better to visit in the winter to avoid the heat and the higher summer prices. A trip around any one of these events is sure to be worth your while.

Gay Gran Canaria: guide to the best gay bars, clubs and events

Gay Gran Canaria: guide to the best gay bars, clubs and events | LGBTQ+ Destinations | Scoop.it
Gran Canaria is a playground for the gay boys. Check out our gay guide to the best parties, clubs and gay bars in Gran Canaria.
Matt Skallerud's insight:

Gran Canaria is a notorious gay destination in Europe, specifically in Playa del Ingles in the South. The island has always been a beacon of tolerance whilst in the olden days, mainland Spain used to have an extremely hostile conservative attitude led by the Catholic Church. The Canary Islands were a popular place to exile people who broke social rules and thought differently.
