“This is a year of rebuilding,” says returning president of the Southern Nevada Association of Pride James Healey.

Dennis McBride, local LGBT historian and director and curator of photography at Nevada State Museum, recalls 1991 being a particularly pivotal year. “Pride was on the verge of dying,” he says. But after years of small gatherings in assorted locations, community leaders doubled down in every way possible, and the ramped-up event ended up surpassing 1990’s barely-300 attendance by more than 1,000—a triumph back then for gay Las Vegas.

Las Vegas is going to be really, really gay in October. It’s hard to recall a month loaded with as many events celebrating the LGBT community as the one that begins this weekend. For starters, on October 8, the Gay and Lesbian Center of Southern Nevada holds its 22nd annual Honorarium awards and fundraising night, which lands this year at the Chelsea inside the Cosmopolitan. What makes this edition unique is what follows the affair: a full performance by comedian Margaret Cho, the Center’s Qmmunity Advocate of the Year.
