Check Out This Year’s Fleet of SF Pride Floats, In Progress

No, the San Francisco Pride floats aren't built by cheerful elves in a magical workshop somewhere. (You're thinking of that other big holiday.) They are created down on the piers at EastWest parades, whose Pier 54 workshop becomes the most fabulous place on earth in the weeks leading up to Sunday's big parade.

Curbed SF stopped by to check in on this year’s float fleet, and bring you a few exclusive photos by way of a preview of the big event.

Among the many contingents at the 46 annual San Francisco LGBTQ Pride Parade, the tech sect is well represented this year, with giant Facebook hands, dreamy Salesforce clouds, and a sleek Uber display all set to head up Market.

We also have a rolling diorama of San Francisco neighborhoods (our favorite), a mobile rock climbing wall, and even a carnival wheel paying tribute to rough and rowdy moments of LGBT civil disobedience, like the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot.

Note, of course, that most of what you see here are works in progress, and don’t necessarily reflect the final result. The next few days will be spent getting the final touches just right.

As a bonus, Pier 54 is also an amazing repository of artifacts from past parades—some left over from the previous 45 Pride parades, some the bits and pieces of latter day Lunar New Year celebrations. And some honestly left us scratching our heads a bit about the original context, but we sure are glad somebody saved them. Also of note are the massive amounts of colored cellophane consumed.
